This week Jeff battled the snow to speak at Uncorrelated Miami. The Institutional Allocator panel will explore the challenges facing endowments, foundations, insurers, and large family offices in an uncertain environment.

Before the trip, we revisited our current and historic experience investing in alternative assets – hedge funds, private capital, real assets, and sub-strategies like absolute return, venture, and direct lending. Working with institutional and private investors alike, we believe in the merits of maintaining the broadest tool kit while adding complexity and illiquidity when merited. In our practice, client-specific circumstances override market conditions and expected outcomes when deciding whether and how to employ alternative investments. We seek to understand the impact of any additional strategies or investments on the whole portfolio, recognizing that investments intending to serve as diversifiers can become intensifiers in periods of stress.

It seems particularly relevant to be thinking about alternative investments following a year like 2025 when virtually every asset class generated above-expectation returns despite almost unprecedented economic and geopolitical turmoil (that has persisted into 2026). Against this backdrop, we appreciate that managers who are nimble, specialize in less covered segments of the market, can express long and short positions, and/or have extended investment horizons may be best suited to navigate the environment ahead. That said, we continue to encourage investors to consider incremental investments on their unique merits, as well as the context of what’s already in the portfolio. The same holds true for private investments where commitments made today may only be realized decades – or in the case of some families, generations – from now.
