This post formed a little late as we’ve spent much of this week out in the world. We’re fortunate to have a vibrant office environment. Our offices sit within a larger collective workspace where we can opt to enjoy the company of other advisors, as well as real estate developers, search engine optimizers, entrepreneurs, and not-for-profit leaders. Similarly, our firm sits within a broad ecosystem of clients, investment managers, colleagues, and collaborators that’s been carefully crafted over decades. As we build Tide Cycle Resources (TCR), we benefit from reconnecting with longtime friends and cultivating new partnerships. This week, we were fortunate to be able to do both. Here are three takeaways:
1. Perspective matters. Preparation for a panel discussion at Markets Group’s Allocators Retreat underscored how much perspective influences outlook. Capital markets are broad and global. Participants in the capital markets are equally broad and global. Our experiences and views are shaped by where we sit both literally and figuratively. The way we evaluate investment opportunities is contextual. Two investors will arrive at different conclusions and both can be right. This gives us great confidence in the benefit of offering a bespoke service model derived directly from a deep understanding of a family’s vision and values.
2. Who matters (I). Given all that’s been going on in venture capital (or maybe better said, all that hasn’t been going on), we were anxious to attend the annual meeting of an esteemed General Partner (GP). Inevitably the discussion included the overhang of software investments made in 2019-2022 prior to the broader availability and adoption of large language models. The GP reminded us that these investments were made on both the promise of the business and the quality of its leadership. While the former is challenged, the team’s been encouraged to see the people they’ve backed working to adapt their businesses to the new environment. In light of the significant uncertainty, finding the best people continues to be a North Star for the firm.
3. Who matters (II). Our second annual TCR dinner gave us an opportunity to celebrate what we’re building with our spouses. We’re incredibly fortunate to get to do work that fulfils us with people who support and challenge us to be our best. The conversations were expansive, the laughs were many, and the cannoli and zeppole didn’t have a chance!
