The morning sky was extraordinary in a way that you couldn’t help noticing as the F train rolled along the elevated tracks through Brooklyn. By contrast, the commute couldn’t have been more ordinary. Familiar faces, rote announcements, platform dashes, sliding doors struggling to close.

Not a soul on that train, nor anyone in the city that morning, would wake on September 12th unchanged. The same is true of pilots and passengers, of our military personnel, civilians and contractors at the Pentagon, of families, of communities, of a nation.

I hold tight the memory of a 25-year-old trader at Cantor Fitzgerald. An athlete, a sister, a friend, a daughter whose mom sweetly gifted her purple pens and pencils to celebrate her starting her part-time MBA at New York University. I try to remember to live the life she didn’t get to.

I also remember the incredible kindness that followed, the bravery of first responders and their constancy stretching into weeks and months, the way we came together – all of us.

So much has happened in the 25 years since that day, and yet it comes back as if we’d just lived it. The reluctance I feel in posting this Sounding is overwhelmed by a desire to honor everyone changed by the events of September 11, 2001. Let us Never Forget.
